As media technologies have evolved there has never been a more disparate and varied range of options from which consumers can consume their media. But this choice comes at an ever-increasing cost – placing further burdens on already- strained household budgets. In Australia, you are looking at roughly $300-350 per month to subscribe to Fox, Netflix, Paramount Plus, Stan (and Stan Sport), Disney, Apple TV+, Optus Sport and Amazon Prime. The choice is ridiculous.
Nearly two-thirds of Australian households have at least one paid subscription to a streaming service. Netflix was the most popular service, followed by Stan and Amazon Prime Video. Netflix’s share price has been under pressure and Netflix is now including advertising on some packages and is also cracking down on password-sharing. Thus, spending on streaming is only likely to increase as the media conglomerates clamp down on activities such as password-sharing.
Further, younger Australians are more likely to subscribe to multiple streaming services, with 37% of those aged 18-24 having two or more subscriptions. However younger Australians – because they are more tech-savvy – are waking up to the fact that there are streaming services that aggregate all the content, include TV channels from around the world and charge an annual subscription that would barely cover a month’s subscriptions for all the above mentioned services.
The popularity of streaming services in Australia continues to grow, with more households subscribing to multiple services and spending more each year. As we continue to spend more time at home and seek out entertainment options, it’s likely that this trend will only continue. But there is a solution… Let’s just say if you know, ya know! If you wanna increase what you are able to watch and save yourself money, then you know what to do. Tribes found salvation with fire in the Amazon. Modern consumers can find salvation with an Amazon Fire stick.
